FACIAL AUGMENTATION

WHAT IS FACIAL AUGMENTATION?

Augmentation involves the insertion of implants into the facial region. The most common areas are chin, cheek, and lips.

WHO IS SUITABLE FOR AUGMENTATION?

Patients with depressed or flattened cheeks can benefit from augmentation as well as patients with receding chins. Thinning of the lips can be corrected by temporary means such as Collagen injections but products such as Softform provide a permanent improvement. Your surgeon can advise which implant will give the best result.

HOW IS THE PROCEDURE PERFORMED?

Implants are inserted under a light general anaesthetic. Most commonly chin implants are inserted after making an incision through the skin under the chin. A pocket is created next to the bone and the implant is positioned and may or may not be fixed to the bone. Alternatively the implant is inserted via an approach inside the mouth. Cheek implants can be inserted in this manner as well. Your surgeon will discuss which approach is most appropriate for you. It is normal to expect some swelling and/or bruising and discomfort after such a procedure.

WHAT COMPLICATIONS CAN OCCUR?

Complications can occur with any surgery and need to be discussed in detail with the surgeon prior to any surgery. Potential problems with implants are asymmetry, malposition, bleeding, infection (which may require removal), and temporary nerve dysfunction.

BENFITS OF AUGMENTATION

Strong skeletal contours enhance beauty. Redraping the soft tissues over an expanded skeletal contour frequently enhances the facial appearance.

SOFTFORM FACIAL IMPLANT

The Softform facial implant provides a long-lasting solution for smoothing facial wrinkles and defining the lip border. The treatment is a safe, permanent material that feels soft and natural, and can be administered through a simple in-office procedure.

The Softform facial implant is made of a soft pliable synthetic material used in extensive medical and surgical procedures e.g. vascular grafts.

The body's own tissue holds the implant in place. The tube-shaped design promotes the growth of your tissue into the tube remaining in place below the surface of your skin. It can be easily removed if you desire.

THE PROCEDURE

After a local anaesthetic your Doctor will insert the implants below the surface of your skin through two small incisions - it generally takes approximately 30 minutes.

FOLLOWING TREATMENT

Treatment results are visible immediately. Some effects which may be experienced include swelling, bruising, and a sense of tightness or discomfort. These should disappear over the next week and softening of the implant is expected over time. Occasionally infection can occur and necessitates removal of the implant.
