Browlift (Endoforeheadplasty)

What Is A Browlift?

The forehead lift or browlift is used to correct saggy eyebrows and improve the lines of a person's forehead that may make them appear angry, sad, or tired.

Benefits of Endoscopic/Minimal Incision Browlift Surgery

  • Less scarring
  • Reduced after effects of surgery
  • Quicker recovery than open surgery
  • Possibility of avoiding an overnight hospital stay
  • Decreased risk of sensory loss from nerve damage
  • Bleeding, bruising, and swelling may be significantly reduced
  • May also be performed on younger patients just beginning the ageing process or already showing wrinkles on the face.

What Is Endoscopic Surgery?

Endoscopic surgery is any surgical technique in which a surgeon uses an endoscope - a miniature camera to see inside the body. The use of the endoscope in facial rejuvenation and remodelling allows facial rejuvenation to be performed without any visible scars. The browlift incisions, usually located behind the hair lines, are enough to allow the endoscopic camera under the skin and soft tissues which allows the surgeons to identify main problem areas and modify or reposition them to give a more youthful appearance.

How is Browlift Surgery Performed?

The endoscopic browlift/forehead lift may be divided into four procedures:

Full Endoforehead Browlift

This browlift procedure improves sagginess of the eyebrow, tissue sagginess of the upper eyelids, wrinkles of the forehead, frown lines, and part of the crow's feet wrinkles. The incisions are made in the frontal hairline and are invisible to the eye.

Frontal Forehead Browlift

This browlift procedure is used to improve the medial and central portion of the brow (head and body of the brow), sagginess of the tissue between the brows, frown lines and forehead wrinkles. The incisions are made in the frontal hairline and are invisible to the eye.

Lateral Forehead Browlift

This browlift procedure is indicated for the improvement of the sagginess of the lateral portion of the brow (tail of the brow), sagginess of the upper eyelid and part of the crow's feet wrinkles. The incisions are made to the side of the temples in the hairline and are invisible to the eye.

Midforehead Browlift

This browlift procedure is used to improve the soft tissue sagginess above the nose, between the eyebrows, sagginess to the medial portion of the eyebrow (head of the brow) and frown lines. The incisions are made in the frontal hairline and are invisible to the eye.

Will I Be Hospitalised For My Brow Lift Surgery?

Browlift surgery can be performed as a day case or alternatively a short hospital stay may be indicated depending on the extent of the procedure. The procedure can be performed under general anaesthetic or local anaesthetic.

How Long Does Eyebrow Lift Surgery Take?

The browlift surgery takes 1 - 1½ hrs to complete. Although you will be able to walk soon after the surgery has been completed, you must have someone to take you home and remain with you for the first 12 hours if done as a Day Case. Medications administered during the surgery may impair your judgement and possibly make you dizzy and unsteady on your feet.

Is Brow Lift Surgery Only Performed On Older Individuals?

Patient's in their 30's as well as those in their 80's may be candidates for a browlift. We all age differently and the changes of age may bother some more than others. Young patients just beginning the ageing process or already showing wrinkles on the face may require a browlift. Dr Hills and his staff will assist you in making a reasonable judgement as to the appropriateness of surgery and the type of surgery that will best improve you.

Will There Be Pain After Browlift Surgery?

Typically there is a little pain after browlift surgery. It is especially important to rest and limit activity for the first 48-72 hours after surgery. You may experience some numbness and discomfort as well as a slight itching sensation around the incisions. This is to be expected and should begin to fade within a week or two. Paracetamol and rest will minimise this discomfort.

Will My Face Have An Abnormal Appearance Afterwards?

The browlift surgery is meant to improve your appearance. You will look younger for your age, but not abnormal. Friends will typically ask if you've lost weight or had a new hairdo. They know that something has happened to revitalise your appearance, but usually don't guess what it is.

How Soon Can I Return To Work And My Exercise Routine?

Most individuals can return to non-strenuous work within 10-14 days. Moderate exercise, such as walking is permissible after 2 weeks. Exercise routines can be resumed in approximately 4 weeks if healing has proceeded normally.

How Long Will It Take Before I Will Obtain the Final Result?

Improvement can be noted immediately but the final results may take several weeks. The surgical incision lines also take time to fully heal.

What Should I Expect To Occur While I Am Healing?

You may experience slight numbness and a slight itching sensation around the incisions. Antibiotic ointment may be prescribed to apply daily to the incision lines to enhance healing. You may experience a slight reduction to your energy levels during the first post-operative week. This is part of the normal healing process.

What Possible Complications Can Occur From a Browlift?

Mild numbness is common but will dissipate in time. One should expect some bruising of the skin during healing. Any skin surgery can result in scarring, however scars are inconspicuous in this surgery. Other risks, but not common, are nerve damage (resulting in uneveness of the brow) and sensory loss which may be permanent, blood vessel damage and fluid accumulation. Hair loss can occur at the incision sites which may necessitate a secondary procedure to excise these small areas.

How Long Will A Browlift Last?

A browlift will turn back the years giving you a more youthful look. A browlift does not stop ageing, it means you look younger and good for your age. One must remember to have realistic expectations. Nothing prevents ageing and so your skin will continue to age with time. It is important to remember that a perfect result is not achievable as people are naturally asymmetrical and that the desired result is improvement not perfection.

What Must I Do To Prepare For Browlift Surgery?

  • Have required blood tests at lease 3 weeks prior to surgery
  • Any prescriptions given by Doctor should be filled and commenced as per instructions from Doctor
  • If your day surgery procedure is scheduled for the afternoon, arrange for someone to be with you at home for the first 24 hours
  • Please advise Dr Hills if you are taking Aspirin or products containing Aspirin, Coumadin, Pradaxa or Vitamin E. They can cause excessive bleeding and poor heeling. Do not take any medication without out knowledge as it may conflict with your surgery
  • No alcohol for one week prior to your surgery. Alcohol can cause excess bleeding
